Charlotte Perkins Gilman: a/b connection

'The Yellow Wallpaper' is not by far an auto/biographical story; however, there is enough evidence to suggest that the experiences described in the story are based on Gilman's life choices. Like the narrator in the story, Gilman herself experienced a struggle between her life as a writer and her life as a married woman. On the one hand, the notes she had left behind (in letter and diary form), have her say that is is quite ok for a woman to be both a mother and a wife. Nonetheless, the very same notes attest to Gilman's wish to devote herself entirely to her work. Hence, she spent over two years debating whether or not she should marry Walter Stetson (she finally said 'yes').

The story has remained a point of wonder for readers over the years. Many asked why she had decided to write such a story in the first place.

Any thoughts on the matter?
